Not Sure If You Should Move? Start With These Questions

By Allison Hammons - July 20, 2026

There comes a point for many homeowners when the question isn't whether they like their home.

The question is whether it still fits their life.

I've had conversations with people who have lived in their home for five years, ten years, even twenty years. Many of them aren't unhappy. In fact, some genuinely love their home.

But they're starting to feel like something has changed.

Maybe the kids have moved out.

Maybe they're working from home more than they used to.

Maybe they're caring for a parent.

Maybe they're looking for less maintenance.

Or maybe they're simply wondering if there's a home that would better support the next chapter of their life.

If you've found yourself having thoughts like that, you're not alone.

Before You Think About Moving, Think About Why

One thing I've learned over the years is that people often jump straight to solutions.

Should we move?

Should we stay?

Should we downsize?

Should we remodel?

But before any of those questions can be answered, I think it's important to ask a simpler one:

Why are you considering a change in the first place?

Sometimes the answer is obvious.

Other times, it takes a little reflection.

The more clearly you understand what's driving the feeling, the easier it becomes to determine what makes sense moving forward.

Does Your Home Still Support Your Lifestyle?

This is one of my favorite questions because it has very little to do with real estate and everything to do with how you live.

If you were choosing a home today, would you choose the one you're currently living in?

For some people, the answer is an immediate yes.

For others, the answer is less clear.

That doesn't mean there's something wrong with your home.

It simply means your needs may have changed.

Homes are meant to support our lives, and our lives don't stay the same forever.

Are You Looking For Something Different, Or Something Better?

There's a difference.

Many people assume that if they're thinking about moving, it means they're dissatisfied.

That's not always true.

Sometimes people aren't looking for something better.

They're looking for something that fits differently.

A smaller home.

A larger home.

Less maintenance.

More flexibility.

A different location.

Closer proximity to family.

The goal isn't always improvement.

Sometimes it's alignment.

Don't Let Assumptions Make The Decision For You

One thing I see fairly often is homeowners making decisions based on assumptions.

They assume a move isn't financially possible.

They assume staying is the only realistic option.

They assume downsizing won't make sense.

Or they assume they'll figure it out later.

The reality is that assumptions can keep people stuck.

You don't need to make a decision today.

But gathering information can help you better understand what options are actually available to you.

And even if you ultimately decide to stay exactly where you are, that knowledge can provide peace of mind.

Clarity Is Valuable, No Matter What You Decide

One of the biggest misconceptions about these conversations is that they always lead to a move.

They don't.

Sometimes people explore their options and realize they're exactly where they should be.

And that's a great outcome.

Because the goal isn't moving.

The goal is clarity.

The goal is understanding your options and making decisions that support your life, your family, and your long-term goals.

One Final Thought

If I can leave you with one piece of advice, it's this:

Don't make housing decisions based on fear, pressure, or uncertainty.

Make them based on your goals.

Take the time to understand what you want the next chapter of your life to look like and whether your current home supports that vision.

Sometimes the answer is moving.

Sometimes the answer is staying.

Neither answer is wrong.

What's important is making the decision intentionally.
