Twenty-one years ago, I sat in my Texas living room, staring at a job offer that would change everything. My husband had an opportunity in Las Vegas—a city we'd only visited once on vacation. I was nervous, excited, and honestly? Terrified I was making a huge mistake.
Fast forward two decades, and I'm still here. Not because I got stuck, but because this city became home in ways I never expected.
If you're considering a move to Las Vegas right now, I want to share what I wish someone had told me before I packed up my life and moved across the country with two young kids. Not to scare you—but to help you come in with your eyes wide open and your expectations realistic.
Because here's the truth: Las Vegas isn't just the Strip, the casinos, and the neon lights. It's neighborhoods and soccer games and farmers markets. It's a place where you can build a real life—but only if you know what you're walking into.
Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Let's start with the real talk—the things that surprised me (and not always in a good way) when we first moved here.
1. The Dynamics of Each Area Are So Different
Las Vegas is a big metro area, but it's not New York or LA. It still feels manageable. What I didn't realize when we moved here is that each part of town has its own personality, vibe, and lifestyle.
Some areas—like Summerlin or parts of Henderson—are family-oriented, quiet, and established. You'll see kids riding bikes, neighbors chatting at the park, and a real sense of community.
Other areas are more transient. People come and go. There's a lot of rental activity, and the neighborhood feel isn't as strong.
And then there are areas that are still growing and changing—new construction everywhere, dirt lots mixed with finished homes, and a sense that the community is still figuring itself out.
Why this matters: When you're relocating, it's so important to understand these differences so you can find the area that actually fits your lifestyle. Not all of Las Vegas feels the same, and where you land will dramatically impact your experience here.
(This is something I help my clients with all the time, because I've lived it. I know what it's like to be new here and wonder, "Where do I even start?")
2. The Air Is Extremely Dry
I'm talking Texas-humid to Vegas-desert-dry. My skin, my lips, my hair—everything felt it.
Stock up on lotion, ChapStick, and a good water bottle, because you're going to need them. I mean it. You will get used to it, and honestly, a lot of people prefer the dry heat over humidity. But it's an adjustment, especially in those first few months.
Pro tip: Invest in a good humidifier for your bedroom. It makes a huge difference.
3. Get Ready for Sunshine—Lots of Sunshine
If you love rainy days and cozy, gray afternoons, I'm going to be honest with you: they're few and far between here.
We get about 300+ days of sunshine a year. The sunsets are absolutely gorgeous, and you'll have calm, beautiful evenings almost year-round.
But if you're someone who loves curling up with a book on a rainy afternoon, you might miss that a little.
On the flip side? You can plan outdoor activities almost any time of the year and know the weather is going to cooperate. Want to hike in January? Go for it. Pool party in October? Absolutely.
4. The Wind Can Be Intense (Especially in Spring)
We get high winds in the spring months—and sometimes they trickle into summer. And sandstorms? They can hit out of nowhere.
The first time I experienced a massive sandstorm rolling in, I was like, "What is happening?!" It was a little scary, not going to lie.
It's not an everyday thing, but it is something to be aware of. Secure your patio furniture, keep your car in the garage if you can, and don't be alarmed when the sky turns orange.
5. This Is a Transient City—And It's Not for Everyone
A lot of people move to Las Vegas for work, for a fresh start, or for opportunity. And some people stay, and some people don't.
What that means is: you have to be intentional about building community and finding your people. It doesn't just happen automatically like it might in a smaller town where everybody knows everyone.
You have to get out there, get involved, and create the life you want here. Join a gym, a church, a parent group, a hobby group—whatever fits your lifestyle. Volunteer. Show up.
The community you want is here. But you have to go out and find it.
THE THINGS THAT SURPRISED ME—IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY
Okay, now let's talk about the good stuff. The things that made me fall in love with Las Vegas and stay for 21 years.
1. The Views Are Stunning
We have mountains all around us, and the scenery is just beautiful. There's something about the desert landscape that really grows on you.
If you love the outdoors, there is so much to do: Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, hiking trails all over the valley, Lake Mead, Lake Las Vegas, Mount Charleston (you can go snowboarding in the winter!).
And weekend getaways? You've got California, Arizona, and Utah all within a few hours. Quick trips, easy escapes, endless options.

2. Las Vegas Is Incredibly Diverse
The people here come from all over the world, and that diversity shows up in our food, our culture, our schools, and our communities.
It's one of the things I love most about raising my family here. My kids have grown up around people from different backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives—and that's shaped them in such a positive way.
3. The Job Opportunities Are Real
When we moved here 21 years ago, the economy was growing. And it hasn't stopped.
Vegas has jobs in healthcare, tech, hospitality, logistics, education, government—way beyond just the casinos and the Strip.
We didn't have a single professional sports team when I moved here. Now we have the Golden Knights, the Raiders, the Aces, and more coming soon. It's been amazing to watch this city evolve.
You can build a real career here. You can build a real life here.
4. You Can Build a Real Life Here
I think a lot of people hear "Las Vegas" and they think tourists, the Strip, partying, chaos.
And sure, that's here. But local Vegas? It's neighborhoods. It's schools and soccer games and farmers markets and community events.
It's a place where you can put down roots, raise a family, build a business, and create the life you want.
My family and I have gained such a love for this city, and we're so proud to call it home.

.
MY ADVICE IF YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT MOVING HERE
If you're sitting where I was 21 years ago—nervous, excited, wondering if you're making the right choice—here's what I would tell my younger self (and what I want to tell you):
1. Take Time to Settle
Don't rush to figure everything out in the first month. Give yourself grace. Moving is a big deal, especially if you're coming from out of state.
It takes time to adjust, to find your rhythm, to feel at home. And that's okay.
2. Find Your People
Get out into the community. Join a gym, a church, a hobby group, a parent group—whatever fits your lifestyle. Volunteer. Show up.
The community you want is here, but you have to be intentional about building those connections. And when you do? You'll be so glad you did.
3. Enjoy a Little Staycation Every Now and Then
One of the coolest things about living here is that you have world-class entertainment, restaurants, shows, and attractions right in your backyard.
Go see a show. Try a new restaurant. Explore the Strip like a tourist every once in a while. It's fun, and it reminds you why people love visiting this city.
4. Don't Try to Do This Alone
Whether you're buying a home, figuring out which area fits your lifestyle, navigating the market, or just trying to understand what life in Vegas is really like—work with someone who's been here, who knows the city inside and out, and who genuinely cares about helping you make the right move.
And that's what I do for my clients. I've lived this experience. I know what it's like to move here with questions, nerves, and hope. And I love helping people like you find their place in this community.

WHY AM I STILL HERE AFTER 21 YEARS?
Because this city gave my family opportunity, growth, adventure, and a life we're truly proud of.
My kids grew up here. We've built friendships that feel like family. We've watched this city transform and grow—and we've been part of that, too.
Las Vegas isn't perfect. No city is. But it's home.
And if you come here with an open mind, a willingness to embrace the desert lifestyle, and a commitment to building the life you want? I think you're going to love it here.
